The Journal Power Tool

It's Amazing

Journaling is the habit of reflection on paper.

“A journal is a blank book that we select for ourselves to use as a record of the exploration we will take into our journey of self-mastery. It is a collection of ideas, thoughts, words or drawings. It is our own private place for expanding our thinking and creating new mental pathways as we learn, observe and experience.”

How I created the writing habit

IT'S WORTH IT

I have used this writing habit from an early age, whether it was writing stories, observations and letters to self-reflection and analysis. Being farm children, we were sent to boarding school from age 12. Every week, our house mistress made us sit and write newsy letters home. My precious mother wrote back, far longer and more instructional letters to all three of us. Long hand on lined pages, rather fat envelopes that arrived every week, whether we had had an out weekend at home or not. Later, my mother went on to become a renowned author of over 40 books in her specialized field of what she called the “natural green heritage” of plants and all they offered us in health, nourishment, medicine, teas, aromas, cosmetics and more. Writing was her way of passing on her wisdom and insight, all her adult life. So prolific a writer was she that even in her 70s she produced two to three books a year – and all written long hand on lined paper, without access to a computer or the internet.

My filled journals probably number about half of that and interestingly, about half of those were blank journals that my mother gifted to me over the years. Another book gifted to me by her back in the early 90s was Julia Cameron’s incredible The Artists Way. Here my journaling took a leap up through the use of the morning pages, which she describes as “spiritual windshield wipers”. And a game changer.

“Morning Pages. It’s the most cost effective therapy I’ve ever found.”

Tim Ferriss

We have around 80 thousand thoughts everyday and 95% of those are exactly the same every day, day after day.

How do I use it?

IT'S EASY

Every morning as you start your day, you dump onto paper every thought, mood, idea, rambling, list, to do’s …….. onto two or three pages which you will never read again. As we now know, of the approximately 80 000 thoughts we have in a day, 80% of those (on average) are worried, anxious and negative. And worse, over 95% of the thoughts we have in a day, we had the day before. What muddled, murky junk do we have zooming around inside our heads? A shocker. It’s amazing that we accomplish so much in our day at all, isn’t it?
Now imagine a day when you start off afresh, with a clear and ordered mind, calm and focused? What would that be like? Enter the power tool of your Morning Pages habit. Just get it all out. Process matters more than the product as its not for other’s eyes. Read more about this in the self mastery module quoted above.
